Taking Data Centers Digital
Managing your colocaton from anywhere.
Let’s face it, data centers are complicated. They’re massive buildings full of biometric security, cabinets stuffed with servers, and an endless map of wires & cables, all of which requires triple-backed up power grids and up-to-the-minute temperature control. Usually, you’d have to have an expert in the data center, but we collaborated with Cyxtera to explore what a remote portal would look like. How could we help customers not only manage and expand their existing setup, but also become fully digital native customers?
There were just a few people we had an opportunity to design this platform for. Not just for the main Cyxtera customer, the CTO’s, IT Architects & Buyers, and Technical Leads, but a tool for the Cyxtera implementation and support teams as well. They’d be using the portal to help their customers expand their spaces and provide regular maintenance through Remote Hands. After countless workshops and user interviews, we started mapping out the entire customer journey before diving into wireframes to make sure we could make important iterations, quickly.
”After every interaction I have with a small studio, I feel at peace. The team is lively, intelligent, and considerate, working with me through every step of the process.”

After all of the research and exploration a couple through lines appeared; efficiency and automation. We started designing dashboards, ordering flows, and support screens that provided Cyxtera’s customers with enough context to make a decision while making sure their primary action was always one-click away. We opted for representational graphs and cards with clear statuses rather than tables for important information to establish a clear hierarchy between what was contextual and what required action.
When it came time to launch, we supported Cyxtera’s marketing team with a product video highlighting, again, the efficiency and automation within the Portal. It tied real product shots with their mesh representing a variety of different products. Shout out to Batch, the wonderful animation studio that helped with bringing the motion to life.
Once Cyxtera launched the portal, it was met with appreciation. Cyxtera’s customers, specifically IT leaders, were saving valuable time through the automation features, the time to market for Enterprise customers was drastically reduced, and Cyxtera’s data centers required less staff on the ground. That’s peace of mind in the data center management world.
On top of that, Cyxtera went public with a market cap of $2.3B! The project was featured in Bloomberg, Business Wire, and CNBC.
